It is done to give the locals a product they are familiar with, and to adjust the menu to local tastes. Most American companies, in one way or another adjust their product line to the local tastes when they expand overseas. It' not just food companies. Even tire companies do it. Just because it's an American company, that does not imply in any way that the product is necessarily American. It once implied, but no longer does, that the money generated would find it's way back to the US in some way.
